The most common mistake in a new seaweed project is choosing a species before looking at the water. It sounds obvious when you say it plainly. But the pressure to have a product in mind. Something to show investors, something to put in a business plan. Pushes producers toward the species decision before the site data is in. This guide works through the main variables that should drive species selection on Atlantic sites.
Temperature range is the first filter ¶
Sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima) grows well in water between 4 and 16 degrees Celsius. Above 18 degrees for extended periods, blade quality deteriorates and epiphyte pressure increases sharply. If your site regularly exceeds 16 degrees in summer, sugar kelp is a marginal choice. Dulse (Palmaria palmata) tolerates a slightly wider range but is slower-growing and harder to harvest mechanically. Knowing your site's temperature profile across all four seasons. Not just the growing season. Is the starting point.
Salinity and nutrient load ¶
Sites near river mouths or in enclosed bays can have salinity fluctuations that stress cultivated species. Most commercially relevant seaweeds prefer salinity between 28 and 35 parts per thousand. Below 25, growth slows significantly for most kelp species. Nutrient load matters too: sites with moderate nitrogen availability tend to produce higher-protein biomass, which is relevant if your target market is food or feed. Sites with very high nutrient load (near fish farm outflows, for example) can produce fast growth but also elevated heavy metal uptake, which creates food safety complications.
Tidal flow and line design ¶
Consistent tidal flow keeps lines clean, reduces biofouling, and ensures the plants are moving through nutrient-rich water regularly. The ideal is predictable flow of 0.3 to 0.8 knots. Stronger than that line management becomes difficult; weaker and you will see more fouling and slower growth. The flow data from your site should inform your line orientation and depth before you order any equipment.
Harvest window and market timing ¶
Sugar kelp harvested before the end of April in the North Atlantic typically has better blade integrity and lower mannitol degradation than kelp harvested in May or June. If your buyer needs a specific quality specification, the harvest window is part of the species decision. Some markets. Fresh food, for example. Require a very short window between harvest and delivery. Others, like dried ingredient supply, are more forgiving. Match the harvest window to the market requirement before you commit to a species.
A note on novel species ¶
There is ongoing interest in species like sea spaghetti (Himanthalia elongata) and sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca) for food applications. Both have genuine commercial potential. Both also have less established cultivation protocols than sugar kelp or dulse, which means more trial-and-error in the first seasons. If you are working with a novel species, build a longer pilot phase into your plan and do not assume that published academic yields will translate directly to your site.
Species selection is a decision that is very hard to reverse once lines are in the water and a seeding order has been placed.
