About Seaweed Blueprint

Mara Lindqvist · Established since 2019

Seaweed Blueprint started in 2019 after Mara Lindqvist spent eight years working in coastal aquaculture development across Norway, Ireland, and British Columbia. She had watched a pattern repeat itself: a well-funded project, a credible team, and then a slow collapse because nobody had done the unglamorous work of matching species biology to the actual site conditions, or because the regulatory path turned out to be three times longer than the business plan assumed. She started the consultancy to do that unglamorous work properly.

The first two years were mostly feasibility studies for small producers who could not afford the large marine consultancies and did not need them. Word spread through the coastal aquaculture networks slowly, which is how Mara prefers it. By 2022 the client mix had shifted to include food brands sourcing seaweed ingredients, a handful of biostimulant companies building their supply chains, and two government-backed pilot programmes in the North Atlantic. The work is still done in small batches. There are no junior analysts running the calls.

Mara Lindqvist spent eight years in coastal aquaculture development before founding Seaweed Blueprint in 2019. She trained under a marine biologist at the University of Bergen, then spent four years with a Norwegian kelp producer before moving to a consultancy role covering Ireland and British Columbia. She has reviewed more than forty seaweed project proposals and conducted site assessments on three continents. On Friday mornings she reads the week's water temperature reports from her monitoring stations before anything else. She keeps a small test plot of sugar kelp off the coast of County Clare, mostly out of habit.

Seaweed strategy, built from the water up.
