A seaweed pilot that runs for a season without producing useful data is not a pilot. It is an expensive experiment. The difference between the two is knowing in advance what you are trying to measure and why. This article covers the data points that matter most in a first or second season pilot, and the ones that most producers either skip or measure inconsistently.
Yield: wet weight, dry weight, and yield per meter ¶
The most basic yield metric is kilograms of dried product per meter of cultivation line. For sugar kelp in the North Atlantic, a well-run first-season pilot should produce 0.8 to 1.5 kilograms of dried product per meter of line. Below 0.8 kilograms, something is wrong. With the site, the seeding density, the harvest timing, or the drying process. Measure wet weight at harvest and dry weight after processing, and record both. The ratio between them is your wet-to-dry conversion factor, which you will need for every cost model you build.
Water quality: the minimum dataset ¶
At minimum, a seaweed pilot should be logging water temperature at cultivation depth (not surface temperature), salinity, and turbidity at monthly intervals. If you can add dissolved inorganic nitrogen, do so. It is the nutrient most directly linked to growth rate and protein content. These measurements do not require expensive equipment. A basic data logger and a monthly water sample sent to an accredited laboratory will cover most of what you need. The data becomes valuable when you are trying to explain why one section of your line outperformed another.
Epiphyte and fouling pressure ¶
Epiphyte pressure. The growth of other organisms on your cultivation lines and on the seaweed blades. Is one of the most common causes of yield loss in a pilot. Record epiphyte presence at each site visit: which species, which sections of line, and at what density. This data helps you identify whether the pressure is site-wide or localised, and whether it correlates with temperature or flow conditions. It also helps you decide whether to adjust harvest timing in subsequent seasons.
Cost-per-kilo: track it from day one ¶
Most producers start tracking costs carefully and then stop when the season gets busy. The result is a cost-per-kilo figure at the end of the season that is partly estimated. Track every cost as it occurs: seeding material, labour hours by task, equipment, transport, processing, and laboratory testing. At the end of the season, divide total costs by kilograms of saleable dried product. That number is your benchmark for season two. Without it, you cannot tell whether you are improving.
Buyer feedback on product quality ¶
If you are selling pilot product. Even at a reduced price or as samples. Record the feedback you receive from buyers. Specifically: iodine content relative to their specification, moisture content, colour and blade integrity, and any microbiological results they share. This feedback is more valuable than any internal quality assessment, because it tells you what the market actually requires rather than what you think it requires.
